Advent Calendar: Day 4

My choice today, and I've picked this cardinal. Cardinals aren't a bird we actually have in the UK - which is a shame, especially on the rare occasions we have snow in the London area, as they are really beautiful against all the white. But I like them anyway, and decided to have this chap on the calendar today. The English robin (which doesn't really look like a US robin, except the red breast) is often featured on UK Christmas cards and other Christmas paraphenalia, the way the cardinal is in the US. I suppose I could make a robin...

We have neither Cardinals nor robins in Australia although we do have quite a large number of brightly-coloured parrots. Since our Christmas is mid-summer, there is no bird that relates to Christmas but the kookaburra or the galah are probably the two that would apprear on Australian Christmas cards, which are comparatively rare - mostly we get Santa and snow scenes as well as the nativity and Three Kings; or the ones that have words like "peace" (which would probably feature a dove) and "joy".

This is a lovely idea. We also have a quilted advent calendar that was made for the children years ago by my stepmother. It has 24 little beds with sleeping children and slockings hanging at the end. This will be the first year that DH and I will have the sweets in the stockings to ourselves! Looking forward to seeing all your 24 squares!
